Overview
UCLA Extension provides a way to connect to the protected resources of our network through the firewall in a safe way. If you are using your home computer to connect to a UC resource, you are required to ensure that your computer is up to date with all the latest patches, and have an antivirus software installed as a part of the UC Policy 401. UNEX requires that you use a UC owned computing device to connect to any of our systems holding sensitive information such as Destiny.
Two Factor Authentication is required
VPN connection to UCLA Extension requires the use of two factor authentication to help ensure the safety of our student’s data. In order to accomplish this, UCLA Extension uses Duo Security. Duo Security works by providing an extra set of proof of identity to the network, either through the use of a smartphone app installed on your phone, or a hardware token called a Yubikey.
Connecting to the VPN
To connect to the VPN, you will need to use the Cisco AnyConnect client, which should be installed on your work computer.
In order to connect you will need to enter the name of vpn.uclaextension.edu into the host field of the AnyConnect software and click the Connect button.
Once the software connects to the VPN server on campus, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
The user name you use is your UNEX Login name
The password is your UNEX Password
The second password is your UCLA Extension Duo rotating code for UCLA Extension, using your YubiKey, or you can just enter the word push in the second password field and the system will send a signal to your Duo App on your smartphone.
- Duo rotating code: Open the Duo client on your smartphone, click on the UCLA Extension and you should see a number that changes every 60 seconds, enter that number. If it is close to changing wait for it to change prior to entering it. You can also just enter the word push if you have too much difficulty entering the code within 60 seconds.
- YubiKey: Insert the YubiKey into your USB port, highlight the second password field, and press the lighted button on the YubiKey device.
You should now be connected to the UNEX network and can remote into the system you need to connect into.
When done with the system it is a good idea to disconnect from the VPN services. You will find the VPN icon in the task bar in the lower right of your screen near the time, click on the vpn icon, and then in this box click Disconnect.
